Authorities in Sironko District are struggling to enforce a presidential directive to evict people from wetlands.

Teddy Nabukwasi the Sironko District Environment Officer says that several attempts to implement the presidential directive on wetlands has proved futile.

Speaking at a meeting organized by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Sironko District officials and media practitioners, Nabukwasi said that encroachers have deliberately refused to vacate wetlands citing unfairness in the implementation of the plan.

The encroachers, Nabukwasi says claim NEMA grants permission to investors to construct in wetlands which is contradictory.

But William Lubulwa the NEMA Communications Officer says that from 2021, they halted the issuance of land titles in forest reserves and wetlands to anyone.
