A call to support and care for people living with disability has been made.

This call was made by Mercy Carol Buteme a medic and founder of Night to Shine Foundation, an initiative dedicated to supporting people living with disability. The Foundation organizes annual engagements with PWDs to encourage social inclusion and create opportunities for them to spend time with their families.

This year’s celebration in Namisindwa District took place over the weekend at Forester Gardens, attracting over 250 participants, mainly young people with disabilities and their families. Buteme says that people with disability are often isolated at family and community level saying that there is need for society to show love and support to PWDs.

Guest speaker Bwayo Emma, also the Namisindwa Male Youth Councilor urged fellow leaders to prioritize the welfare of PWDs saying that some leaders ignore PWDs because of their perceived inability to mobilize politically. Bwayo highlighted the National Special Grant for Persons with Disabilities, saying that the programme funds are often mismanaged, with only a small fraction reaching the intended beneficiaries.
