The leaders argue that the state of the current police station has fueled the escape of suspects. In September, more than 20 suspects on charges of murder, rape, and aggravated defilement escaped from the police station and up to date they have not been re-arrested.

Last month, three suspects disappeared from the cells allegedly with the aid of a police officer.
When arrested, the suspects are detained in old Uniports that are also used by the police as offices.

Fred Soyekwo, the Bukwo Town Council LCIII Chairperson, says that the detention center at Bukwo central police station is not safe to detain suspects. He also says that the police station can be easily attacked, officers overpowered and suspects released.

James Chemutai, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner, of Bukwo, says that there is an urgent need for the Police leadership to consider constructing a police station with a strong detention room to curb the frequent escape of the suspects.

Maj. Gen Geoffrey Kasigazi, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) said that there are plans to construct a new police station that will be in a better position to hold suspects until they appear in court.
