Namisindwa Authorities Investigate Alleged UWA Rangers’ Assault

Authorities in Namisindwa District are investigating circumstances under which Stephen Namukowa, a resident of Sibanga village was allegedly assaulted by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.


Namukowa, a known herbalist in the area was reportedly assaulted while descending from Mt. Elgon National Park where had gone to get mushrooms and medicinal herbs. Namukowa alleges that he was stopped by UWA rangers and severely beaten.

Bosco Bwayo the NRM Chairperson for Tsekululu Sub County says that following the incident, many residents are now living in fear. Bwayo has called for urgent action and protection of the community.

Bwayo Emma, the NRM flag bearer for the position of LCV Chairperson for Namisindwa has condemned the acts by UWA rangers. Bwayo wants action taken against the latest incident by UWA rangers. According to Bwayo, there is need for peaceful co-existence between the national park and the nearby communities.

Bosco Nabbonge the Namisindwa Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) says investigations into the matter are underway and the management of UWA has been notified.
