Police in Mbale District are investigating circumstances under which a 27 year old expectant woman died under the care of a traditional birth attendant (TBA)

The deceased has been identified Brenda Namakoye from Nasenyi village in Butaleja district.

The incident reportedly happened on Sunday at Luyekha village, Bushikori parish, Bungokho Sub County in Mbale district.

Rogers Taitika the Elgon region police spokesperson says Namakoye went to Florence Kakayi’s home, a traditional birth attendant aged 60 for delivery. Taitika says that Namakoye’s condition worsened as a result of over bleeding and she died on her way to a nearby health center.

The deceased’s husband John Nambafu sounded an alarm attracting people who dragged Kakayi to Mbale Central Police Station for custody.

Robert Wandwasi the Mbale district HIV/AIDS focal person says it is absurd that expectant mothers still seek the services of traditional birth attendants. Wandwasi says that expectant mothers should go to health units for better management.
