The Kiira Regional Police spokesperson, James Mubi, has disclosed that autopsy reports conducted on the deceased residents of Buyengo town Council in Jinja district have confirmed traces of food poisoning.

According to reports, an unidentified individual allegedly added poison to the food prepared for mourners attending the send-off of the late Ahamad Magumba, the county Sheikh of Buyengo Town Council on February 11, 2024.

Mourners from the surrounding areas began experiencing symptoms such as stomachaches, diarrhea, and dizziness, initially attributing them to malaria. However, the situation escalated on February 15th, with over 103 individuals presenting similar complications, resulting in the deaths of three people.

Fatuma Aliyinza, a resident of Nawandyo village in Nawampiti Sub-County, Luuka District, who remains admitted at Jinja Hospital, recounted being served food in a plastic bag, which she brought home for her two children. Her two children, four-year-old Suleiman Byanguwa and Shamim Nangobi, were confirmed dead on February 15th, 2024. Aliyinza urges the police to intensify their investigation and ensure the arrest of the suspects responsible for this criminal act, which has resulted in tragic loss of life.
