Micro, small and medium entrepreneurs in Bugisu and Bukedi Sub-regions in Eastern Uganda have been urged to certify their products and thereafter acquire a quality mark.

This call was made at a stakeholder sensitization workshop on standards and quality of goods on the market organized by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), Trade Mark Africa and Ministry of Agriculture. The workshop was held at Mbale Resort Hotel in Mbale City.

UNBS Principal Public Relations Officer Sylvia Kirabo says that it is important for micro, small and medium enterprises to certify their products and acquire a quality mark from UNBS so as to compete favorably on the market but to also assure the consumers about the products safety.

Dr. George Mangeni the Mbale City Production Officer said that there is need for entrepreneurs to comply with the set standards but also come up with strategies on value addition for the products.

Asumin Nasike the Mbale Resident City Commissioner decried the high number of substandard products on the market which have potential health risks to the public. Nasike urged UNBS to strengthen and intensify their operations against fake products on the market. She also suggested a plan where a naming and shaming plan be introduced against the businesses that engage in sale of fake products.

Mutesi Zaituni a dealer in confectionaries in Mbale City welcomed the sensitization training by UNBS saying it has helped her to understand the need to certify products but also produce quality products.
