Landslide victims in Bududa District have reportedly misused the funds they were given to ease their relocation.

This issue came up at a stakeholders meeting at Bududa District offices and attended by State Minister for Relief and Disaster Preparedness, Lilian Aber. The meeting also marked the launch of the relocation of more than 200 families to Bunambutye resettlement camp in Bulambuli District.

This plan marks the start of the second phase of relocating people living disaster prone area in Bugisu Sub-region. Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) partnered with Give Directly, an NGO to provide each household with 17 million shillings to facilitate resettlement in Bunambutye resettlement camp.

In the first phase, more than 200 households received 7 million shillings each and were promised an additional 10 million shillings for relocation. In the meeting, it was observed that some beneficiaries had diverted the 7 million shillings to paying school fees and dowry.

But Bududa LCV Chairperson Milton Kamoti Wasunguyi wants the entire relocation plan halted until all intended beneficiaries have received all the 17 million shillings.

Bududa Resident District Commissioner Africana Aharikunbira says there will be no politicization of the relocation plan by government. He says that once funds are disbursed to the beneficiaries, the relocation will be enforced.
