Vendors at Mbale Central Market are expressing frustration over a prolonged water crisis, which has lasted nearly five years since the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) disconnected their supply.

The disconnection reportedly occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic because of the bill that had accumulated to about UGX 100 million.

Yusuf Nsubuga, the general secretary at Mbale Central Market, revealed that the water was cut off after Mbale City, failed to clear the outstanding bill. Vendors tried to pay off part of the debt, but their efforts were insufficient to restore the water supply. Nsubuga also explained that vendors now rely on water purchased from the nearby Mbale Police barracks to keep the market running. Vendors are charged for using the market's toilets, with the collected money going towards buying water.

Situma Masaba, a vendor in the fresh vegetable section, noted that the lack of water affects their business, as they cannot keep their produce fresh. Without water to sprinkle on vegetables, they dry up quickly, leading to losses.

Harriet Kakai, the Deputy Mayor of Mbale City, denied allegations that the city had failed to pay the water bills but did not offer an explanation for why the water supply remains off.
