The Spiritual Leader of the Jewish Community in Uganda, Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of West Africa, Rabbi Gershom Sizomu Wambede has asked the Ugandan government to respect the rights of the opposition members.

In his message ahead of the Martyrs Day celebrations on Tuesday at Namugongo, Rabbi Gershom Sizomu Wambede said that just like the 45 Christian converts were executed for their faith between 1885 and 1887, there is need for governments to respect opposition member’s rights as stipulated in the Ugandan constitution.

Wambede says that the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government should use power well by supporting all religions and religious leaders but also appreciate the role played by the opposition. He says that the government should also treat all citizens equally regardless of religion and tribe.

According to Wambende, the Martyrs exhibited a high degree of resilience and persistence which led to the spread of religion in Uganda despite resistance by those in power at that time. He says that through religion, a number of ills have been fought in society.
