15 bodies have so far been recovered with 111 people still
missing following landslides which struck the sub counties of Buluganya and
Sotti in Bulambuli District on Wednesday evening.
Faheera
Mpalanyi the Bulambuli Resident District Commissioner says the most affected
parishes are Namunane and Buluganya parishes in Bulambuli District and Bukyabo
Sub County in Sironko District.
According
to Mpalanyi, despite recovering 15 bodies, more than 111 people are still
missing. She confirms that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has
provided excavators to aid in breaking through the debris so as to recover more
people. She however says that recovery efforts are being hampered by the
failure by the excavators to reach the site of the tragedy.
Mpalanyi
says UPDF is currently using hand held implements to create routes through
which the excavators can reach the landslide sites.
Mpalanyi
explains that the landslides have left more than 200 families displaced after
their houses were destroyed. She says the affected families are in urgent need
of support. She says they have notified the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM)
about the tragedy and the need to relocate the displaced families.
According
to a statement by the Uganda Police Force, 15 people are injured and are
admitted at Buluganya Health Centre III.
