Busia Elders Welcome Government’s Plan to Lower SAGE Age and Raise Benefits

Older persons in Busia district have expressed excitement over the decision by government to reduce the age and increase on the funds of beneficiaries of Social Assistance Grant Empowerment-SAGE program.



The older persons expressed their excitement through their district chairperson elder’s league, Lawrence Okumu, in the press address on Sunday in Busia town.

Dominic Mafabi Gidudu,  the minister of elderly affairs in his address on Tuesday last week at Uganda Media Centre pronounced the cabinet decision to enhance the amount SAGE funds beneficiaries are to get in the next financial year 2026/2027 from Ugshs: 25,000 to shs: 35,000 and also lower the age of eligibility from 80 years to 65 years. The older persons shall be earning the grants after every three months.

The chairperson of Busia district elders league, Lawrence Okumu, said the government's decision to lower the age of qualifying older persons benefiting from SAGE program has been long overdue. They are so excited for the government to consider the request they were pursuing since the program was initiated and raised the monthly grant Sh35,000.
