All non-functional street lights are to be fixed, after authorities at Mbale City received 460 million shillings from Central Government.

This exercise is expected to start this week. The solar powered street lights along Mugisu Hill, Nabuyonga Rise and Republic Street were installed five years ago under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) program, are currently non-functional.

This has led to darkness in several parts of the City, drawing criticism from the public.

Mbale City Mayor, Cassim Namugali, has confirmed the securing of the funds saying works on the street lights will start this week with completion expected in a month’s time.

Residents Samuel Mudebo and Masitula Namataka have welcomed the development saying it will reduce incidents of insecurity in Mbale City.
