Over 200 people Displaced in Mbale City

More than 200 people in Munkaga village, Industrial City Division in Mbale City have been displaced to pave way for the construction of the Nauyo- Mukanga road.


On Tuesday morning, a grader razed down houses so to enable the construction of the 10km Nauyo-Mukanga road take shape.

Sarah Mukamba one of the affected residents says her two houses were demolished without prior notice by authorities at Mbale City Council. Mukamba says they should have issued notification of an impending demolition to enable them prepare.

Sam Wekunya, another resident who lost three lock ups says the Mbale City Council authorities should have first compensated them before demolishing their houses.

But Harriet Kakai the Mbale City Deputy Mayor says that under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) program they received over 5 billion shillings meant for tarmacking, installation of solar lights and completion of the drainage. Kakai says that construction works are expected to start next financial year but there is no compensation for people living in road reserves.
