Police in Mbale are holding a 31-year-old man suspected of being behind the swapping of Automated Teller Machine Cards and stealing money from customers attached to different banks.
The suspect has been identified as Hirari Ngabirano a resident of Nansana in Wakiko district.
According to Rogers Taitika the Elgon region police spokesperson, Ngabirano who has been on the police’s wanted list was arrested on Wednesday near post bank along Republic Street in Mbale City. Taitika says Ngabirano was found with a number of ATM cards belonging to DFCU, Centenary and Post Bank.
Taitika says that the suspect has been cited at different ATM machines appearing to help out people who fail to withdraw their money. Police says in the process, he exchanges fake ATM cards with genuine ones and later goes on to withdraw money. He faces charges of theft and obtaining money by false pretense.
