The rehabilitation of the 10.7 kilometre Butiru-Makenya-Tororo road was on Wednesday launched at a function held at Bukhadala Sub County in Manafwa District.

The road is being rehabilitated by KAMS Contractors Limited at a cost of 1.5billion shillings under the National Oil Seed Program funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in partnership with the government of Uganda.

Speaking at the launch of the rehabilitation works, Butiru County Member of Parliament Godfrey Matembu Wakooli says the poor state of the road had affected the trade between Manafwa and Tororo Districts with traders struggling to transport their produce to markets in neighboring Tororo District. Wakooli is optimistic that the rehabilitation of the road will have a positive economic effect on the community.

Manafwa District Woman Member of Parliament Mary Goretti Kitutu said that the cordial working relationship amongst fellow legislators from Manafwa District has improved their capacity to lobby for better services for the people. According to Kitutu, at the time she was a minister, she pushed for projects like roads for Manafwa in cabinet which ended up in Parliament for approval and subsequent implementation.

Manafwa LCV Chairperson Kigayi Hosea Kimono applauded the residents of Bukhadala Sub County and other areas for engaging in the growing of oil seeds like sunflower, groundnuts, soya beans and sesame; a reason three roads including Butiru- Makenya- Tororo road were considered under the National Oil Seed Program.

Bernard Massa a resident of Bukhadala Sub County says that the poor state of the road which connects Manafwa and Tororo Districts had also affected health service delivery with many residents struggling to access health services in neighboring Tororo.
