President
Yoweri Museveni has asked Ugandans to plant trees in order to restore land for
climate resilience.
In a speech read for him by Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja,
Museveni also called for the protection of the environment so that the country
can have proper rainfall patterns. This call was made at the national
celebrations for the World Environment Day. The celebrations were held at
Mafudu Primary School in Sironko District under the theme: Land Restoration for
Climate Resilience.
State Minister for Environment Beatrice Anywar Atim said
that land degradation has had a devastating impact on the local communities in
Elgon region. According to Anywar between 1989 and 2023 an estimated 5,000
people have lost lives as result of landslides and flash floods in Elgon
region. In a bid to curb environmental degradation, she has asked people to
stop cultivating along the slopes of Mt. Elgon and to plant bamboo seedlings to
rejuvenate the ecosystem.
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Board
Chairperson Prof. James Okot- Okumu emphasized the need to grow trees so as to
be able to fight the negative effects of climate change such as floods,
landslides and soil erosion.
