A section of Activists in Mbale want government to revise HIV messages that promote stigma in schools.

This call was made at the Mbale District/City HIV Committee Review Meeting held at Mbale District Offices on Monday.

Betty Balisalamu, the executive director of Women With A Mission (WWM), a human rights NGO says that a visit to most schools in Mbale District and Mbale City found that some of the HIV messages displayed promote stigma and need to be revised. Balisalamu cites messages like ‘HIV KILLS’ which according to her instill fear amongst children living with the disease.

Peter Mweru the team leader at Mbale Network of Young People Living With HIV(MNYPA) says such discriminatory messages demoralize young people from anti-retroviral treatment.

Brenda Kasede, a Prevention Officer with Baylor Uganda says that various partners have realized the need to change the messages so as to match the current HIV context.
