Namisindwa District Local Government Council has approved new tax measures aimed at increasing local revenue.

Among the new tax measures, each ‘malwa’ and ‘waragi’ drinking joint will be charged 10,000 shillings. Guest house operators will pay 200,00 shillings annually while drug shops, pharmacies and clinics will part with 50,000, 150,000 and 250,000 shillings respectively. New movement permits will also be introduced for livestock. Under this, those intending to move cows will pay 5,000 shillings while goats, sheep and pigs movement will cost 3,000 shillings.

Fred Maina, the Namisindwa District Secretary for Finance presented the new tax policy saying it had been endorsed by the District Executive with full input from the technical team. Maina says every District is required to identify and expand its local revenue sources.

But Emma Bwayo the Namisindwa District Male Youth Councilor has opposed the new taxes saying that more public consultations were needed before approving them. Bwayo says that the business community feels there is no value for the taxes they are currently paying as a result of poor services.

Munzaru Michael, a Malwa joint operator in Nambozo, has criticized the tax policy. Munzaru wants the District leaders to halt the implementation of the policy because many businesses are struggling to stay afloat.
