Inspector General of Government (IGG) Beti Olive Kamya has asked broadcasters in Eastern Uganda to champion the fight against corruption.

Kamya sounded the call on Tuesday at a regional engagement for broadcasters organized by the Uganda Communications Commission(UCC) at Mbale Resort Hotel in Mbale City. According to Kamya, broadcasters need to amplify the voice against corruption in Uganda by highlighting the dangers of corruption and its impact on the development agenda of the country. She says the public should be urged to look out for people whose source of wealth is questionable.

Kamya has also decried the habit of glorifying corrupt people by the Ugandans. She says it is unfortunate that a lot of wealth is amassed through corruption tendencies but many Ugandans heap praise on the corrupt individuals.

Betty Byuma, a journalist with Bridge FM in Jinja City expressed reservations about the corruption fight citing threats from Resident District Commissioners(RDCs). Byuma said some journalists who cover issues of corruption are often threatened with arrests.

Meddy Kaggwa the Head of Multimedia Content at Uganda Communications Commission said the regional meeting was informed by a need to remind broadcasters about minimum broadcasting standards so as to contribute to the development of society.
