Yellow fever is a disease transmitted through bites of mosquitoes infected by the yellow fever virus (flavirvirus). Symptoms include: high fever, headache, general body aches, fatigue, vomiting, blood in urine or stool and or yellow discoloration of skin and or eyes.

The vaccination exercise will run from 10th to 16th April 2025. Dr. Fred Nsubuga, a senior medical officer at the Ministry of Health, says that following an outbreak of yellow fever in Kibuku District in 2024 where six cases were registered, there was need to adopt preventive measures by carrying out mass vaccination in Kibuku and the neighboring Districts. The Districts include; Sironko, Namisindwa, Bududa, Bukwo, Bulambuli, Kapchorwa, Kween, Manafwa, Mbale, Mbale City, Namutumba, Kaliro, Butebo, Pallisa, Bududa, Budaka, Busia and Butaleja.

Nsubuga who was speaking at a yellow fever media orientation workshop at Mt. Elgon Hotel on Friday noted that the yellow fever vaccination is targeting 4 million people in the 19 Districts and people from 1-60 years will be vaccinated.

Jolly Twongyeire a communication officer with the Ministry of Health explained that they engaged the media on the upcoming yellow fever vaccination to enable them disseminate accurate information to the public.

Journalists like Ayub Kirinya of IUIU FM in Mbale City and Juma Seyid of Rock Mambo FM in Tororo accused District Health Officers of deliberately refusing to divulge health related information to journalists saying this has affected their right of access to information.
