Police in Manafwa are investigating circumstances under which suspected smugglers set fire on a Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) car.

A 30 year old man was also allegedly killed by a stray bullet. The incident occurred on Thursday in Buwasibi cell, Butiru Town Council in Manafwa district.

According to Rogers Taitika the Elgon region police spokesperson, URA officials intercepted a smuggler, prompting other suspected smugglers to violently attack the officials, assault them, and set their car registration number UA902AQ on fire.

Taitika says that Army officers responded and attempted to disperse the crowd, firing shots into the air. Unfortunately, a stray bullet hit Brian Mukoni, a 30-year-old resident of Butingu village, who later succumbed to his injuries.

Police say Mukoni’s body was taken to Mbale City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
