Mbale District LCV Chairperson Muhammad Mafabi has asked youth to champion the fight against HIV by living responsible lives.

Mafabi sounded the appeal at a one day HIV symposium for young people in Mbale District. The symposium was organized by Mbale Network of Young People Living with HIV (MNYP) in conjunction with Mbale District Local Government. The symposium was held at Mbale District Local Government Council Chambers. According to Mafabi, there is need for young people on anti-retroviral treatment to adhere to health guidelines and those who are negative should live responsible lives.

Derrick Suuna from Mbale Network of Young People Living with HIV called upon the Mbale District to increase the funding towards HIV activities in order to reduce donor dependence. Suuna suggests that funding should be increased from the current 0.1% to 0.2% of the budget.

Robert Wandwasi the Mbale District HIV Focal person says that there are currently 170,000 young people living with HIV between 15-24 years in Uganda. Of these young people, 120,000 girls are living with HIV while 50,000 boys are living with the disease in Uganda.

He explains that 88,000 children aged 0-14 years are living with HIV in Uganda; an indicator that there must be concerted effort in fighting the disease which seems to be a menace to the young population.
