Coffee farmers in Buginyanya and Bumugibole sub-counties in Bulambuli district are concerned with the increasing coffee pests and diseases saying they are having a negative impact on their yields.

The concerns were raised at an award ceremony for the best coffee farmers under the auspices of Balambuli Kwigate Coffee Limited and Darley Investments Limited.

According to the farmers, the coffee berry disease is hitting them hard. Justine Gimei Justine, one of the coffee farmers from Buginyanya wants government to regulate the prices of the pesticides saying that they are too expensive.

Beth Bwoyilisa another farmer from Bumugibole Sub-County said that disease coupled with poverty forces many of them to harvest their coffee prematurely which fetches low prices.

Fuugo Rogers, the Bulambuli District Extension Officer said plans are underway to train farmers on disease and pest management.

Presiding over the awards ceremony, Dominic Mafabi Gidudu the Minister of State for the Elderly pledged government support in combating pests.
