The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has picked interest in a case where a 20 year old man was reportedly shot by a police officer in Mbale City.

Silver Wangalwa a resident of Namabasa village in Northern City Division in Mbale City was reportedly shot by a police officer, Moses Ojok attached to Namatala Police Station.

The police officer reportedly shot Wangalwa on accusations of trespassing on his land. Now Irene Nandala, a grandmother to Wangalwa says they are admitted at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital with the bullet still stuck in Wangalwa’s body. Nandala says that efforts to remove the bullet through an operation have proved futile. She is now calling for government support for her ailing grandson and the arrest of the errant police officer.

Akello Josephine, the regional human rights officer under Uganda Human Rights Commission says they have taken up the matter and will investigate any human rights violation by the Uganda Police Force and the police officer as mandated under article 52 of Uganda’s constitution. Akello however wants Wangalwa treated as the commission investigates the matter.

Denis Pahani the Industrial City Division Police Commander says that the police officer was arrested but released on bond. Pahani says Wangalwa’s family is yet to return the police form 3 from hospital which can then be used to take the errant police officer to court. He however says that the police office has already financially supported Wangalwa.
