The Minister of works and Transport Edward Katumba Wamala has presided over the ground breaking for the rehabilitation of the 382KM Tororo-Gulu gauge railway.

Like most railway lines in Uganda, Tororo – Gulu Gauge railway stopped working in 1992

Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony at Tororo Municipality today, the Minister said Government has contracted China road and Bridge Corporation to construct the gauge railway projected to take two years.

Katumba said Government has injected 200billion shillings in this project to help with the compensation of affected persons who are said to have encroached on the railway land, construction of drainage channels among others.

Waswa Bageya, the permanent secretary at the ministry of works and transport said that the railway will start from Tororo and connect to Mbale, Kumi, Soroti and Gulu. He says once the railway line is back in place, trade between Uganda and the neighboring countries will be eased and all bulky goods will be transported at a fair cost compared to road.
