Opposition Chief Whip John Baptist Nambeshe has asked teachers to continue offering services despite the challenging salary disparities.

In June last year, teachers under the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) staged a strike compelling government to enhance their salaries with equity for both science and arts teachers. The strike resulted from the government’s decision to increase the pay for science teachers nearly by 300 per cent.

The increment saw the government increase the pay for graduate and grade V science teachers to 4 million Shilling and 3 million Shillings up from 1.1 million Shillings and 796,000 Shillings respectively. Arts teachers continue to earn between 1.2 million shillings and 700,000 shillings. The teachers however called off the strike after President Yoweri Museveni promised that the arts category would be considered at a later time.

Nambeshe who is also the Manjiya County Member of Parliament (Bududa) says that with the hard economic times the country is going through, teachers’ pay must be equal across the board. Nambeshe says both science and arts teachers purchase goods from the same markets and there is no need for selective pay.

Kagenyi Lukka the Manafa Deputy Resident District Commissioner says that since government committed to enhancing the salaries of arts teachers they just need to continue with their noble cause. According to Kagenyi, government appreciates the role played by teachers and there is no need of any industrial action since their issues will be amicably handled.
