Police in Mbale City are investigating circumstances under which supporters of two candidates vying for the position of Member of Parliament for Northern City Division clashed leaving more than 14 people injured.

Elgon Region Police Spokesman Rogers Taitika says that it all started when the three NRM candidates; Isma Mukakandi, Umar Nangoli and Hudu Hussein went for a joint campaign meeting at Namanyonyi Health Centre III ground on Sunday.

Taitika says that a request by NRM election officials to use Umar Nangoli’s vehicle as a podium for candidates to address the public was allegedly declined by Hudu Hussein. Taitika says that another request for the candidates to draw lots to determine the order in which they would address the public was also allegedly turned down by Hudu Hussein. At this point, a clash between supporters of Hudu Hussein and Umar Nangoli broke out leaving more than 14 people injured.

According to Taitika, both Nangoli and Hudu have reported cases to Police. Taitika has urged candidates to regulate their supporters to avert any possible clashes that might lead to lose of lives. He says they are investigating cases of assault, malicious damage and incitement to violence.
