As the globe celebrates World Radio Day, radio journalists, the academia and the civil society has highlighted the significant role radio has had on issues surrounding climate change.

13 February is a date proclaimed by UNESCO to celebrate radio broadcast, improve international cooperation among radio broadcasters and encourage decision-makers to create and provide access to information through radio. World Radio Day 2025 is being celebrated under the theme “Radio and Climate Change: A Powerful Tool for Climate Action.”

Eliane Apio, a news manager at Open Gate FM in Mbale City says that radio in rural Uganda has created awareness about climate change by enabling communities to understand the effects of changing weather patterns on agriculture and water. According to Apio, through radio, communities have been able to share experiences and solutions on climate change.

Rehemah Kantono a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) says the fact that radio reaches a wider audience compared to other media means it is key in raising awareness about climate change especially in rural Uganda.

Prossy Kawala, the Director at Center for Media Literacy and Community Development (CEMCOD), a non-profit organization says that this year’s theme for the World Radio Day moves hand in hand with a new project they recently launched in Mbale and Jinja.

Kawala says the project aims at empowering youth and women to advocate for climate justice and actively engage in sustainable environmental practices in partnership with radio stations in Mbale and Jinja.
