Bulambuli Struggles to Absorb UGX 1B Road Allocation

Bulambuli district has been unable to fully utilize the Shillings 1 billion allocated by the central government for road rehabilitation in the 2023/24 financial year.

The road fund was intended for repairing district roads, but heavy rains and logistical challenges have hindered progress. Speaking in a phone interview on Monday, Annet Nandudu, the LCV Chairperson of Bulambuli District, explained that the district, which is 90% mountainous, faced difficulties accessing certain areas due to persistent rain. As a result, only 75% of the funds were used, as the rain prevented them from completing the planned roadworks.

Nandudu highlighted that the district has only one grader, making it impossible to cover all 33 sub-counties and 3 town councils. Due to the ongoing weather challenges, the district's roads committee decided to suspend all road rehabilitation until the rains subside. Roads like Nanduga Road and Buluganya-Bumasobo Road were among those left incomplete due to the harsh conditions.

Residents of Elgon North County in Bulambuli District, frustrated by the delays, took matters into their own hands last week. Hundreds of locals used hand tools to rehabilitate key roads like the Giduno to Kibanda Road, which had become impassable.
