A plan to restore trade order has left politicians and the technical wing in Mbale City divided.
Authorities led by the Mbale City Clerk Assy Abirebe this week announced that they will enforce an operation in which all street vendors, hawkers, taxi and buses will be sent to gazetted areas.
They also issued a five day ultimatum to the affected people. According to Abirebe, the operation aims at bringing order and cleanliness to the City.
But Musa Kasaja the Industrial City Division Speaker has questioned the timing of the operation citing Mbale City’s 20-year failure to address the problem. According to Kasaja, the political leaders were not consulted on the planned operation and had they been consulted, they would have called for a better approach through dialogue and a longer grace period before enforcing the plan.
According to Kasaja, they will not allow the enforcement of the operation on Monday until the City authorities provide suitable locations for the affected people.
