This call was made by Catherine Ajilut the officer-in charge traffic in Industrial City Division. According to Ajilut, many commercial motorcycle riders (boba boda) in Mbale City recklessly ride through zebra crossings with no intention to stop to allow pedestrians to safely cross.

Speaking at the repainting of a zebra crossing near Bugwere market on Thursday, Ajilut stated that the practice of knocking pedestrians at zebra crossings equates to murder under traffic laws and it must stop. The repainting was done as part of a road awareness campaign by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) in conjunction with Prudential and the Uganda Red Cross.

Esther Namayanja the IRA Market Development Officer for Eastern Uganda said the repainting was identified as one of the activities for the ongoing Insurance week.

Mubale Abudallah Mubarak, a supervisor at Prudential Mbale branch, said they decided to partner with other organizations to repaint the zebra crossing as part of cooperate social responsibility to the community.

Obo Michael, the branch manager at Red Cross Mbale branch, said the repainting was necessary so as to reduce accidents at Bugwere market.
