Coffee rust caused by a rust fungus, Hemileia vastatrix. It can reduce coffee production from between 30% to 50%. Infestation levels vary depending on a variety of factors.

Francis Nabugodi the Sironko District Agricultural Officer says the affected sub-counties are Buhugu, Masaba, Busulani, Bumasifwa, Bumalimba and Bukise. Nabugodi says that disease has affected coffee farmers in terms of reducing production.

He says they have started massive sensitization of the farmers in the affected sub-counties about the need to use preventive measures like spraying coffee plants so as to avert possible spreading of the disease.

Timothy Wegoye and Suzan Nadunga are coffee farmers in Bukise Sub County. Wegoye and Nadunga are worried that if action is not taken, their coffee will be no more.
