David Masaba the head of the psychiatry department at Mbale
Regional Referral Hospital says they currently have 40 patients with mental
problems.
Masaba says that majority of the patients admitted are young
people aged 7 to 18 years. He says most of them have developed mental issues
because of smoking and drug abuse.
Sandra Mukholi a village health team member says some
pastors and traditional healers are to blame for the increased mental cases.
Mukholi says some treatable cases are delayed with hope that through prayer and
traditional rituals, they can be healed.
