Professor
David Mukunya a lecturer in medicine at Busitema University has asked men to
embrace circumcision saying it reduces the chances of contracting HIV/AIDS and
other sexually transmitted infections.
Professor Mukunya was speaking at a dissemination and dialogue
meeting on the national HIV/AIDS research agenda to end AIDS as a public health
threat in Uganda.
According to Mukunya, research shows that in areas where
circumcision is carried out like in Bugisu, HIV/AIDS cases are lower. He also
says that substantial evidence shows that removal of the foreskin reduces the
risk of male heterosexual HIV acquisition. In addition to HIV, Mukunya says
male circumcision has been found to reduce the risk of other sexually
transmitted infections (STIs).
Robert Wandwasi the Mbale District HIV/AIDS focal person
warned circumcised men to desist from living reckless lives under the pretext
that circumcision saves one from contracting the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
