Residents of Busia Municipality are living in fear of disease outbreaks as medical waste from drug shops and clinics continues to contaminate water sources and their homes.

People from Mugungu B village in Eastern Division report that medical wastes are dumped in drainage channels, and during rains, runoff carries the dangerous materials into streams, putting their lives at risk of contracting infections and other health hazards.

Madina Bakulumya said her child was pierced by a used injection syringe, and the wound has taken a long time to heal.

Christine Nahuba said she spends hours cleaning her home whenever it rains because drug shops and clinics take advantage of the season to dispose of waste.

Benard Makokha, LC2 Chairperson of Central Ward, noted that despite raising the issue with the Busia Municipal Council, little action has been taken.

Moses Okurut, the Busia Municipality Principal Health Inspector, said illegal, unlicensed clinics and drug shops are responsible for dumping waste in service lanes and swamps, endangering residents’ lives. Okurut said operations are planned against illegal operators and appealed to residents to report anyone seen dumping medical waste.
