A health expert in Mbale has decried the rate at which
some patients are abandoning Tuberculosis(TB) treatment.
Rashid Chelogoyi the assistant TB and Leprosy
Supervisor for Mbale District says that some patients once enrolled on TB
treatment, abandon the process after only two weeks. Chelogoyi says that the
patients often abandon the treatment after getting some relief which is
dangerous. He says TB treatment takes six months and there is need to adhere to
the entire plan. He says the non-adherence has led to the emergence of
resistant TB which might require treatment for two years.
Chelogoyi says some of the TB patients who abandon treatment end up in social gatherings like bars which puts the lives of the community at risk. He says unless concerted effort is done to encourage full TB treatment by the affected people, the disease will continue challenging Ugandans.
