Authorities in Mafudu Sub County in
Sironko District have threatened to arrest people without pit latrines.
Patrick Munialo the Mafudu
Sub County LCIII Chairperson says that a number of households have no pit
latrines which puts their lives at risk of sanitation related diseases. Munialo
says those without lit latrines could carrying out open defecation.
He says that a team of
health officials carried out an assessment about sanitation facilities like
plate racks, garbage pits and latrines and found some households not up to the
set standard.
Munialo now says that an
operation against households without pit latrines will soon be launched and
culprits will be arrested.
Low latrine coverage in
rural areas and generally increased open defecation still haunt Uganda’s sanitation
and hygiene situation. From the global perspective, 4.5 billion people still
have no access to improved sanitation facilities. Of these, 2.3 billion have no
access to basic sanitation facilities and 892 million practice open defecation.
