Pregnant mothers in Bulambuli District have been urged to embrace antenatal care.

Beth Nakusi the Bulambuli District Assistant Health Officer in-charge of Maternal and Child Health says that strict adherence to antenatal care at health units helps both the mother and the unborn baby to be closely monitored.

Nakusi says that under the current guidelines, a pregnant mother must visit the antenatal clinic seven times as opposed to the four times. Nakusi has asked local leaders and village health team members to encourage pregnant mothers to honor all antenatal visits for improved maternal and child health in the community.

Dina Nandudu the Bulambuli District Health Educator has advised pregnant mothers to desist from seeking the services of traditional birth attendants saying it puts their lives at risk. Nandudu says mothers should acquire services from health units where they can be supported in case of any emergency during birth.

The current maternal mortality ratio in Uganda is 336 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. Infant mortality is 43 deaths per 1000 live births
