The male condom appears easier to use compared to the female condom.

Robert Wandwasi the HIV/AIDS focal person for Mbale District says that most women seem to be uncomfortable with using female condoms and instead prefer their counterparts using the male condom.

Wandwasi says that with the World marking International Women’s Day every 8th March, there is need to continue agitating for the use of the female condom. He says that with HIV/AIDS prevalence rates now at 5.4%, majority of the new infections are in the female youth group and action needs to be taken.

According to Wandwasi, women should be encouraged to use the female condom so that they are actually in control of their lives.

The United Nations (UN) theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”.

Wandwasi says technology advancements are also having an effect on the young population and in turn influencing decisions on their lives. He says that in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic, there is need to push for responsible social media use and close monitoring by parents.
