Sironko
district is grappling with a severe water shortage following the breakdown of
the Buteza gravity flow scheme, which has been non-functional for six months.
The affected areas include Buteza Town
Council, Buteza Sub-county, Bugusege Town Council, Namugabwe Sub-county, and
surrounding communities.
Robert Masaba, the Buteza Town Council LC
III Councilor, said that critical institutions such as Buteza Health Center III
and Namadogoda Primary School are severely affected. He explained that the
gravity flow system stopped working in April 2025 and warned that prolonged use
of alternative water sources could spark a cholera outbreak.
Masaba emphasized that the situation at
Buteza Health Center is especially dire, with patients and healthcare workers
struggling to access safe water for daily operations.
Sam Gidongo, the Sironko district engineer, said he was unaware of the issue and promised to consult the Chief Administrative Officer before responding. He noted that the district is currently focused on repairing the Masaba Sub-county gravity flow scheme, which was destroyed by a landslide in May 2025, and that work on Buteza would follow once that project is completed
