President Yoweri Museveni has announced a ban on the importation of second hand clothes in a bid to save the country’s textile industry.

Museveni announced the ban at the commissioning of 16 factories and ground breaking for construction of 9 new ones at Sino Uganda-Mbale Industrial Park in Mbale City. According to Museveni, there is need to protect Uganda’s textile industry by stopping the importation of second hand clothes. Museveni says that the conducive environment has attracted investors into setting up factories that are manufacturing clothes at good prices.

He says Ugandans should stop putting on second hand clothes from abroad and instead purchase new clothes manufactured locally. Museveni says that purchasing locally manufactured clothes also provides jobs to many youths in the textile industry.

Museveni also ordered all government bodies especially those in the power generation sector to buy cables and meters from factories in Uganda. He said that any government official that does not heed to the directive will be sacked.

State Minister for Investment and Privatization, Evelyn Anite said that the Mbale Industrial Park has 40 factories and has created 2000 jobs for the youth. She applauded President Yoweri Museveni for attracting investors to come to Uganda and encouraging Ugandans to join the money economy.

The Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Zhang Lizhong said the enabling environment makes them continue encouraging more investors to come to Uganda.

The Mbale Industrial Park produces glass, textiles, household detergents, mobile phones, smart televisions, baby diapers, clothes, LED bulbs, tubes, electric meters and stockings.
