Kilimo Trust, a not-for-profit organization working on agriculture for development across East Africa has conducted a sensitization workshop for rice farmers in the districts of Mbale, Bulambuli and Kween.

The rice farmers were sensitized on the need to embrace environmentally friendly rice varieties, such as upland rice and super new varieties, which can thrive in non-wetland areas.

Kerutado Birungi, Kilimo Trust's Executive Director, stressed the importance of adopting the new rice varieties saying that rice is a staple food in urban areas and yet its cultivation is being restricted in wetlands. According to Birungi, farmers should abandon the old varieties and take up new varieties which are highly productive and fetch better income.

Jimmy Lamo, a researcher said that they had partnered with Kilimo Trust to carry out research on rice which led to the new water efficient varieties.

Sam Malomo and Sarah Nange, are rice farmers in Mbale District who have welcomed the new varieties. Malomo and Nange say that the new varieties will lead to sustainable rice production.
