Mbale Market Fire Blamed on Charcoal Stove

Police have attributed yesterday’s fire outbreak at Kumi road market to a charcoal stove.


The fire which started at around 9pm left over 500 vendors counting loses. It destroyed items like sewing machines, stalls, kiosks and clothing among others.


Rogers Taitika the Elgon Region Police Spokesman says one of the vendors left a charcoal stove burning which ignited the fire that spread to other areas in the market. Taitika says police got an alert after the fire had covered most parts of the market. He also says that an access route to the market for the fire brigade was a challenge and this hindered timely firefighting.


Sarah Khaiza one of the affected vendors has asked for government support and other well-wishers to to help them in restoring their merchandise which was burnt.
