The
Elgon Region Traffic Officer Mutabingwa Moses has warned taxi and bus drivers against
carrying excess passengers.
According to Mutabingwa,
many public transporters are carrying excess passengers which makes them
susceptible to road accidents. He says several drivers have been stopped only
to find them carrying passengers beyond the recommended capacity.
Mutabingwa has also asked
drivers to always move with their driving licenses to avoid any inconveniences
when stopped by traffic personnel. He
says as police, they have realized that some drivers are not licensed while
others drive under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
According to traffic statistics, Uganda registered 20,394 cases of road
accidents in 2022. Out of every 100 crashes, 22 people died while 61 percent of
all accidents were as a result of reckless driving.
