Police last week launched an operation against riders without riding permits and in Mbale City alone, over 50 people have been arrested.

Twaha Wanagali a rider at the KCB bank stage says the permit which ranges from 50,000 to 100,000 shillings is expensive for most riders who have other pressing needs like fending for their families.

Mwambu Mwalye from Nkoma stage has asked for a five months grace period to enable riders comply with the requirement. The continued Police operations will push many young people out of the boda boda business to criminality.

Rogers Taitika the Elgon Region Police Spokesman says the operations follow increased road accidents caused by boda boda riders. Taitika has asked the riders to comply with the policy. He says boda boda riders should acquire the relevant riding skills before getting riding permits to reduce road accidents.
