The only traffic lights in Mbale City blacked out three months back putting road users at risk of accidents.

The traffic lights are located along the Mugisu Hill- Nabuyonga rise roads in Industrial City Division. Residents are also concerned that the solar powered street lights that were installed by the contractor, Zhongmei Limited have since stopped working, leaving several parts of Mbale City in darkness.

Gibedya Mudathir the Bilal Mosque Imam in Mbale City says that following the completion of works along the Mugisu-Nabuyonga rise roads, the authorities should have worked on the traffic lights. Gibedya says that the Mbale City authorities should treat this matter with the urgency it deserves to save people’s lives.

Harriet Kakai the Mbale City Deputy Mayor admits the problem of having dysfunctional traffic lights and street lights. According to Kakai, Mbale City is supposed to carry out maintenance works on the traffic lights.

Kakai says the works have been delayed as a result of poor local revenue collection. She says that most of the money collected by technical officers is diverted to personal benefit.
