Bugisu Cooperative Union (BCU) has launched a plan to register its member coffee farmers in an effort to meet international demand for Arabica coffee and comply with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

BCU General Manager, Barbra Wasagali, announced the plan on Monday as she unveiled a team of 20 people trained by the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA). The team will conduct the registration of coffee farmers over a 20-day period across selected primary societies.

Wasagali says the team underwent a week-long training and is equipped with the necessary resources to collect accurate data from farmers.

Matia Mugerwa, an extension officer at UCDA explains that the registration aims at creating a comprehensive database and traceability system for farmers and enhancing coffee quality by assigning farmers specific geo-locations. According to Matia, the effort also aligns with global standards under the EUDR, which seeks to establish a deforestation-free supply chain for products like coffee, cocoa, and palm oil.

He warned that failure to comply could negatively impact Uganda’s coffee sector, as the European Union is a major export market.
