Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has sensitized local artists from Bugisu region about the copyrights law.

Copyright law allows ownership through “works made for hire,” which establishes that works created by an employee within the scope of employment are owned by the employer.

According to Uganda registration service bureau (URSB) some local artists are ignorant about this, whereas other people use their content without permission.

Addressing the artists at Mbale Resort Hotel in Mbale City yesterday, Gilbert Agaba the Director Intellectual Property at URSB said they want Parliament to make some amendments to the copyright law. According to Agaba, there is need to work hand in with artists in order to make changes like having media houses pay artists for playing their music. This will enable the artists to benefit.

John Rex Achilla the Mbale Resident City Commissioner speaking at the meeting called for a mindset shift by the artists saying they should consider their music as a job and release development oriented content.
