The Ministry
of Gender, Labour and Social Development has launched investigations into
allegations of harassment and exploitation of workers at Hoima International
Stadium.
Several workers of M/S SUMMA, a Turkish
Company that is constructing the stadium are accusing the company's top management
of gross mistreatment, exploitation, and dismissal from work without clear
reasons.
The government signed a contract with the Company,
in June to construct a 20,000-seater multi-purpose stadium ahead of the 2027
Africa Cup of Nations.
Most of the casual workers who spoke on condition
of anonymity say that they are being subjected to compulsory HIV/AIDS testing
on top of poor working conditions, dismissal from work without clear reasons,
inadequate wages, and a lack of basic benefits by the company.
Joseph Aheebwa, the M/S
SUUMA Construction Company’s Human resource officer has however refuted the
allegations being made by some of the workers stating that, they are baseless
and aimed at destroying the image of the company.
